DeepGlamour.net is like my blog, only better

Friendly competition is healthy. Virginia Postrel (whom I have crushed on) is editor in chief of Deep Glamour. If glamour is supposed to tantalize, the blog lives up to its name. It offers the kind of discourse on beauty and charm that I’ve endeavored to have here at Reflections on Playboy, and it’s a classier act than mine in every way.

For Postrel, glamour means something more particular and more elusive than mere beauty or mere charm. It may not always coincide exactly with my idea of beauty. Nevertheless, I identify her as a kindred spirit in the effort to keep ethics from overshadowing aesthetics. As Steven Pinker knows, the human moral sense often oversteps its bounds. Pleasure and beauty for their own sake need continual defense against the onslaught of petty moralizing. Like many of my heroes, such as Oscar Wilde and Hugh Hefner, Postrel has fought this fight well.

As a solitary blogger, I can’t expect to match the output of a group blog like Deep Glamour. But maybe, if I’m lucky, I’ll be inspired to imitate their breadth of research and their good manners. Of course, the more comments people leave here, the better I’ll be motivated (hint).
