Mr. Hefner subliminally encourages me to work harder

Wilson Bryan Key convinced himself that Ritz crackers are subliminally seductive because the Kraft corporation prints the word sex in barely visible letters on each of them. Likewise, I’m convinced that Hugh Hefner is goading me towards higher output on this blog with intentional, conspicuous errors about the history of Playboy.

The 55th Anniversary Playmate Hunt pictorial in the December 2008 issue includes this quotation from Hef: “The lesson to be learned from these Centerfolds remains the same now as it was back in 1954: Good girls like sex, and there’s nothing wrong with that.” Actually, there is something wrong with that. Playboy was first published in 1953. (The December 2008 issue is technically volume 55, number 12, but only because the absence of a March 1955 issue caused a permanent hiccup in the numbering.)

Obviously, the big man is making sure I’m still paying attention—as well he should. When I blogged about John McCain recently, I forgot to mention the article about him that John Dean wrote for the September Playboy. I don’t want a reputation as the kind of sleazeball who doesn’t bother to read any of the articles. Thank God for benevolent 82-year-olds who watch over us irresponsible kids in our thirties.
