This time of year, small-government libertarianism should look especially good

If you live in the U.S., your tax return is due tomorrow. While the price tag of our overreaching federal government has your attention, please watch these videos on good things that the government wastes money to save us from, respectively immigrants and marijuana.

“Thank you for calling Reason.tv. Please press one for English.” Say, I wonder whose voice that is at the very beginning of this video on immigration. (That reminded me to update my blog post on the women of Reason magazine to include the lovely and talented Virginia Postrel, by the way.)

Pot.tv apparently stopped archiving this documentary on marijuana prohibition. But Reason.tv’s Dan Hayes has discovered it at Google Video.

    Thanks for this.
It's only been a lifetime of pointless prohibition, but how many lives has the selectively applied law destroyed?
About time people stood up to governments and smoked more openly.
As the last serjeant who tried to bust me said, 'Come on - we know you smoke. I smoke," he said, "and so do all the cops in that room (the ones stripping and searching my house).
"So why don't you make all our lives a little easier and tell us where you've got it?" he continued.

I know this is hardly the point, but I always get aggravated at everybody getting all excited about their tax refund checks. For one thing, I never get one because I don't like to give the government an interest-free loan. Unfortunately, I always miscalculate and owe under-withholding penalities in addition to my taxes, which pisses me off. But the main reason it bugs me is people act like the refund is a windfall, when really all it is is THEIR MONEY that they earned the previous year and the government has been holding onto. It's no gift!

    Shantra,
Money is like sex: it’s not easy for most people to be lucid and rational about it all the time. Does the government seek gratitude on the cheap by “giving” so many people this money? If so, you haven’t really wandered off topic at all. The bigger the government gets, the more incentive it has to distract us from the size of the bill.
